Why Your Refuge Choice Matters

On the TMB, where you sleep defines your experience. A great refuge means a hot meal, cold beer, warm bed, and stories shared with fellow hikers. A bad one means a sleepless night in a cramped dorm with a lukewarm dinner.

After 12 completions of the TMB over 8 years, here are our definitive picks.

The 8 Best Refuges

1. Rifugio Bonatti (Italy)

Stage 5 · 2,025m · Book 4+ months ahead

The crown jewel of the TMB. Perched on a balcony overlooking the Grandes Jorasses, Bonatti offers the single best view from any refuge on the route. The food is excellent Italian mountain cuisine — think polenta, local cheeses, and proper espresso. The new wing has comfortable 4-person rooms.

2. Refuge du Lac Blanc (France)

Variant stage · 2,352m · Book 3+ months ahead

Not technically on the main TMB route, but the Lac Blanc variant is worth every extra metre of elevation. The refuge sits beside the iconic milky-blue lake with Mont Blanc reflected in its surface. Sunset from the terrace is unforgettable.

3. Refuge Les Mottets (France/Italy border)

Stage 4 · 1,870m · Book 3+ months ahead

A beautifully renovated refuge right at the foot of Col de la Seigne. The half-board dinner is consistently excellent, the showers are hot, and the setting in a wide alpine meadow is gorgeous. It fills up fast — book early.

4. Auberge Mont Blanc (Trient, Switzerland)

Stage 8 · 1,300m

More guesthouse than mountain hut, the Auberge in Trient offers private rooms, excellent Swiss cooking, and a garden terrace. After days in dormitories, a private room with real sheets feels like luxury.

5. Rifugio Elisabetta (Italy)

Stage 5 · 2,195m · Book 2+ months ahead

High on the Italian side with views of the Miage Glacier. The pasta is handmade, the staff are welcoming, and the atmosphere is pure Italian alpine hospitality.

6. Refuge de la Croix du Bonhomme (France)

Stage 3 · 2,433m · Book 3+ months ahead

The highest refuge on the standard TMB route. It's basic but well-run, and watching the sunset from 2,433m with a vin chaud in hand is a TMB highlight.

7. Chalet Val Ferret (Switzerland)

Stage 7 · 1,600m

A family-run chalet with a warm atmosphere, excellent rösti, and comfortable rooms. The Swiss stages of the TMB have the best accommodation overall.

8. Refuge du Col de la Forclaz (Switzerland)

Stage 8 · 1,527m

Clean, efficient, Swiss-run with spectacular views down the Rhône Valley. The apple tart is legendary among TMB hikers.

3 Refuges to Approach with Caution

We won't name them directly — situations change and management rotates. But watch out for:

  • The one at the end of a long descent where they know you have no alternative. Overpriced, underwhelming food, indifferent service.
  • The over-capacity refuge that books more beds than it has. If you're assigned a mattress on the floor, that's your warning sign.
  • The refuge with "hot showers" that are lukewarm for 90 seconds. Check recent reviews before booking.

How to Book

Most refuges take bookings via phone or their websites starting in March/April. Use our planner to see all refuges mapped along your route with direct booking links.
